The Secret of a Happy Marriage

on 25/03/10 at 2:56 pm

“The secret of a happy marriage is finding the right person. You know they’re right if you love to be with them all of the time.” – Julia Child

According to the God’s Word, marriage is the interdependently declared purpose to remain and live with each other as a unity, as man and wife. In the Holy writ marriage is not just a test by which it is to be determined whether or not the couple will remain fully committed to each other. God has a real plan for couple asset forth in the Bible.

The Bible says, the first marriage was conducted by God personally in the Garden of Eden. In Genesis 2:18, we read that God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone: I will make him a helper suitable for him”. Being single, was not good, and so God created a woman suitable for Adam, a wife to be his companion and counterpart. Marriage was ordained by God as one of His first acts after he created the world, animals, and mankind. In the Garden of Eden Adam and Eve were united in the presence of God Himself. This is the way God has designed marriage.

“The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” – Genesis 2:23, 24

The Bible has many worth verses which contain important lessons on how to live a really happy married life fulfilled with love.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” – 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

God wants marriage to be characterized by trust, respect to each other, and happiness. This is the kind of love God wants each of us to exemplify in our lives and particularly in our marriages. After all, God revealed the book, His own Word, on love.

For Christians, these words are all about Jesus. Matthew 19, 5-6: 5“and Jesus said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother, and be united to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Paul was an apostle of Jesus Christ. Paul indicates his wish that all men were as he. Paul’s clearest statement is but and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife. But some misunderstand Paul, thinking that he is allowing for divorce when he states “art thou loosed from a wife”. Nevertheless, Paul speaks of sexual relations in marriage as a preventative for sexual immorality outside of marriage: “Because of immoralities, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. The best way for the Spirit to direct Paul in describing this relationship was through the relationship of marriage.

In dealing with her husband in a positive way, she should remember that a quiet and mild spirit. A wife can help her husband to be a good head in other ways. Paul makes it clear that remarriage is only possible when the marriage union is dissolved by death. And if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man. Ephesians tells us that the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. God is first, Jesus is the head of the husband, then the wife.

“Nevertheless, also, let each one of you individually so love his wife as he does himself; on the other hand, the wife should have deep respect for her husband.” – Ephesians 5:33

Christian marriage is a union between husband, wife, Christ and God. Life based on Bible is one that is in balance, with Christ as the head of the man and the wife together. Reflecting the fact that human marriage is modeled after the divine relationship between Christ and the Church, husbands are told to love their wives with this kind of outgoing, selfless love (Ephesians 5:25, 31-32). And as the church submits to Jesus, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything in their life.

“Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.” – Colossians 3:18-19
